Description

Coffea arabica is the earliest cultivated species of coffee and is still most widely grown. It is an allotetraploid with 11 sets of chromosomes (2n=4x=44). Linkage map has been developed for diploid species, C. canephora an economically important progenitor species of C. arabica. Large scale sequencing efforts are in progress in coffee with the aim of getting high yielding and better quality coffee varieties that are disease resistant and withstand harsh weather conditions.
